Professor John Pettifor is Head of the Department of Paediatrics at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and the University and Director of the MRC/University Mineral Metabolism Research Unit. He graduated in Medicine from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1968, completed his specialization in Paediatrics from the same University in 1974 and his PhD(Med) in 1981. He is past president of the Nutrition Society of South Africa and is currently president of the College of Paediatrics of South Africa. His research interests are mainly in the areas of paediatric bone disease and calcium and vitamin D metabolism in children. He has published some 110 papers in refereed journals, and has authored over 20 chapters in books. He was awarded the Dr Charles Slemenda Award for his contribution to children’s bone health by the International Conference on Children’s Bone Health held in Sheffield, UK in 2002.
